Elevators are instruments used in maxillofacial surgery and dentistry to remove teeth and tooth roots or separate them from tooth sockets. Elevators are intended both for separation of the periodontal ligament from the surface of the root of the tooth before extraction, and for luxation (dislodging), that is, rocking the tooth in the vestibulo-oral direction and removing the tooth from the alveolus. Elevators are also used to remove fragments of tooth roots, including the removal of broken root tips from hard-to-reach areas.
